About Bikram Choudhury
Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India(tm) also known as Bikram Yoga. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with India’s most-renowned physical culturist at that time, Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda (Author of the renowned book “Autobiography of a Yogi”). Bikram practiced Yoga at least four to six hours every day at Ghosh’s College of Physical Education in Calcutta. At the age of 13, he won the National India Yoga Championship. He was undefeated for the following three years and retired as the undisputed All-India National Yoga Champion.
At age 17, a weight-lifting accident crippled Bikram. With the Ghosh’s guidance and a strict regimen of yoga, Bikram defied doctors prognoses that he would never walk again and completely healed his knee. In a United Nations sponsored research project at Tokyo University, Bikram helped doctors prove that yoga regenerates tissues and relieves symptoms of chronic ailments. Bikram then tailored his technique for the Western person. Combining Eastern discipline and Western medicine, Bikram perfected his comprehensive, twenty-six posture system making it suitable for everyone. As an exact technique and series, Bikram’s Yoga brings health and peace to practitioners of all ages and fitness levels.
Bikram is not only the founder and originator of Bikram Yoga, he is also one of the world’s foremost experts in yoga and world affairs. He is captivating, fascinating and one of the most influential yoga teachers alive today. He has published two influential novels, “Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class” and “Bikram Yoga: The Guru Behind Hot Yoga Shows the Way to Radiant Health and Personal Fulfillment.” In addition, he is an accomplished vocalist and has released several CD’s available through itunes.
